It was one of Nissan's first crossovers and was released about the same time as several other companies' competing car based crossovers. Based on the jointly developed Nissan/Renault Common Module Family (CMF) platform architecture, the third generation model (T32) incorporates styling cues from the Qashqai, Murano, and Patrol. Japanese production of the third generation X-Trail originates from the Nissan Motor Kyushu Co., Ltd. factory. Production also began in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
