Doctors and health experts are urging people not to drink or inject disinfectant after U.S. President Donald Trump suggested scientists should investigate inserting the cleaning agent into the body as a way to cure COVID-19.
Paul Hunter, a professor of medicine at Britain's University of East Anglia, said it was one of the most "dangerous and idiotic suggestions" of the coronavirus crisis so far.
He said ingesting or injecting disinfectants would be likely to kill anyone who tried it and described the comments as "hugely irresponsible" as some people might try it.
Hunter said Trump should refrain from comment and instead leave the U.S. response to medical experts.
