The possibility of Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel driving for Mercedes in 2021 as current Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton’s teammate started as distant rumblings but has taken a life of its own over the last couple of days. Many F1 experts have vouched for such a partnership as it will be good for F1.
Though something that is potentially even more interesting is the latest developments suggesting that Vettel has been in touch with Red Bull for a possible return.
I’m your host Dillon Shelley and first up on Formula World:
Vettel vs Hamilton & Talks with Red Bull
Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton have won nine of the last ten world championships but they have never raced each other in equal machinery within the same team.
Many F1 experts feels that if that became a reality, it would once and for all settle who the best driver is among the two. Many also feel that it will be a boost for Formula 1 in terms of hype and excitement
Former F1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone is one of them and he explained why the pairing would be beneficial for the sport
"I'd like to see him in a Mercedes, against Lewis Hamilton. That would be good for Formula 1. Both get along without any problems and they are both enormously talented. It would be a super, super team."
"Especially in the current situation, Mercedes should certainly consider contracting Sebastian as a German hero. This could give an emotional impulse to the employees and also send positive signals to the outside world. Vettel's PR impact at Mercedes would be huge"
And Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has just revealed that he has been in touch with Vettel and revealed that only a team capable of race wins would keep him in F1 beyond 2020
"I've been in contact with Sebastian. We looked at all possible options within Red Bull Racing, but unfortunately there weren't any. I think the conclusion was that Sebastian would continue if he joined a winning team. That would be a clear story"
"That would be a pity for the sport if he retires, but for him it is the best solution if there is no winning team available. Sebastian is a four-time world champion who has achieved a lot in this sport and he is also in a good economic position. Stopping before joining a team in midfield would suit the character and style of Sebastian"
Verstappen “Will Not Be Happy” About Budget Cap
All the teams in F1 have now agreed to a budget cap. However, there was a time when it seemed like Red Bull would oppose such a move. Helmut Marko has explained what caused the change of heart
"We're ahead. Even with the amount that has now been agreed, we are still talking about a lot of money. If the field is more compressed and the driver is more in the foreground, and the technology is not too advanced, then I think that this can be a very positive step for the future"
One of the doubts that still linger is whether driver salaries will be included in future budget caps.
"I think that this has to be rounded far up. You have to make a distinction: there is a fixed salary but there are also bonuses per Grand Prix won and for winning world championships and the like"
"We now have a budget cap in terms of car development. Max will not be happy to hear this, but at some point there will also be a budget cap on the drivers' salaries. This is the next step"
