Coronavirus: Matt Hancock insists it is safe to take elderly family members to care homes

Coronavirus: Matt Hancock insists it is safe to take elderly family members to care homes Health Secretary Matt Hancock insisted it is safe to take elderly family members to care homes — pointing out there was a 79 percent fall in care home deaths from the peak of the crisis in the week ending April 24 to the week ending May 29.

Asked whether the dropping death rate and protections already announced by the government meant family members should feel comfortable sending loved-ones into care, Hancock said they should, but noted that “we’ll keep on strengthening the measures; this isn’t over.”

It comes after care homes were severely hit by the coronavirus pandemic, with people sent back to homes without a test after being in hospital. The comments from Hancock suggests the government is confident it finally has a grip on the issue, with Pearson in place to oversee the new taskforce.
