George Floyd death: Buildings on fire, stores looted as protests rage in Minneapolis

George Floyd death: Buildings on fire, stores looted as protests rage in Minneapolis Fires broke out overnight in Minneapolis, MN on Wednesday, as protests continued in an outpouring of rage over the death of George Floyd, seen in a widely circulated video gasping for breath as a police officer knelt on his neck.

The second day of demonstrations, accompanied by looting and vandalism, began hours after Mayor Jacob Frey urged prosecutors to file criminal charges against the white policeman shown pinning Floyd to the street.

Armed civilians took to guarding stores during the looting. “It’s about damn time that some heavily armed rednecks stood with fellow citizens,” says one of the men who explained they support the protests but not the looting.

The crowd grew to thousands as night fell and the protest turned into a standoff outside the station, where police in riot gear formed barricade lines while protesters taunted them from behind makeshift barricades of their own.
