Juggling two or more jobs had always been my thing. My friend and roommate Susie would always complain about it though. She wanted me to have some personal time and go out and date. But I was pretty content with what I used to do.
I used to work as a graphic designer for a company 9 to 4 and then at night, I used to work as a club promoter. I did have to work hard but each job came with a perk. My night job used to get me invited to a lot of parties, they loved having me and my day job, well my crush, Jared worked there with me.
Working with Jared was so much fun. We were two best designers in the company so we were always paired together for big projects. And that motivated me to always do my best as I wanted to impress him and hear him say,
“Well Sarah, we make a pretty good team.”
Man, I liked him so much but I wasn’t very good at flirting to try and take things to the next stage and neither was he.
But there was this other guy in the office too, Stan. He used to try to flirt with me all the time. He was also very good friends with Jared so I had to pretend to play it cool even though he irritated me just for the sake of Jared.
I was so infatuated with him. I am embarrassed to admit but sometimes I used to stalk him on social media from fake accounts and send him emails saying “I love you,” multiple times anonymously.
One day, Jared asked if we should go out to get drinks together after the office.
“Sure,” I replied instantly as I started getting butterflies out of excitement but I was not letting that chance go.
However, my excitement didn’t last for long. He told me that Stan was coming along as well and for once I had thought he asked me out for a date, foolish of me.
So we went out for a drink after the office was over, all three of us. We took a table and started talking about office and projects. Stan was trying to flirt with me from time to time but I ignored him. But then he said something that haunts me to this day.
“Sarah, would you like to do something like this another time, just the two of us,” he said.
“How dare he?” I thought, he said that while Jared was right there. I didn’t know how to handle such a situation. I mean, who would know how to react when someone asks you out in front of your crush?
But I had to say something so I just told him that I was not available. However, I was a little anxious that Jared would get the same message as well and I didn’t want him to.
After that, with a lot of disappointment, I went to my mom’s for suggestions. I was so confused and I thought she would be of some help to boost my confidence to ask Jared out but boy I was wrong.
After I told her everything she replied to me with, “Look, Sarah, you’re a hardworking, independent woman and you’re better off single. Men are trash.”
