Despite much stricter prevention measures in effect,... the number COVID-19 cases continues to spike in Europe.
The death toll is also surging in many parts of the continent,... including Italy, which saw its highest single-day spike since May.
Lee Seung-jae reports.
The number of daily COVID-19 infections continues to rise in Europe,... as do the death tolls.
On Thursday,... Italy reported 455 deaths from COVID-19,... the highest single-day rise since early May.
The country also reported over 34-thousand cases over the past 24 hours,... the highest daily rise since the start of the pandemic.
Italy has reported over 800-thousand infections,... with the death toll now surpassing 40-thousand.
COVID-19 infections are also on an exponential rise in Switzerland.
The country reported over 10-thousand cases in the past 24 hours.
According to data from Swiss health authorities on Thursday,... the country took eight months to reach 100-thousand cases,... but now surpassed 200-thousand in just two weeks.
In a move to contain the virus,... the country announced it was cutting the number of trains to Germany and France.
Five daily Swiss train connections to Italy will be suspended from Monday to at least December 12th,... while routes to France will be reduced to just two connections daily between Geneva and Paris.
In Sweden,... the nation's prime minister has gone into protective self-isolation,... after a person close to him came into contact with an infected patient.
This comes as the country has been rolling out stricter measures to urge people not to gather in crowds.
Earlier this year,... while other European countries locked down quickly,... Sweden drew global attention by allowing restaurants, gyms and schools to stay open,... and did not require people to wear masks.
